For a Good Time, Try…

OIL PULLING

Ahhhh…as we find ourselves settling nicely into the new year, I think it is high time to share with you one of my favorite healthy habits.  And no it does not include the treadmill or quitting any of your vices or depriving yourself of anything!

It’s called oil pulling.

I’m serious.  I have heard about oil pulling for years but the practice never really interested me until I read this article recently.  The writer didn’t have the best experience but it still encouraged me to try the detox method, because why not?  I always have unrefined coconut oil and already have a crazy morning routine so why not throw some oil in my mouth before I hop in the shower?  Done and done.  I detailed my experience below.  In summary, I am an oil swilling believer!

Day 1
So yeah, duh, putting cold, hard, solidified coconut oil in your mouth first thing in the morning (well first thing after I drank my warm lemon water and cayenne) is about as appetizing as it sounds.   But get over it.  I started with just about a teaspoon.  It quickly turns to a liquid and tastes…fine, good even.  I got in the shower and went about my routine and for real, the twenty minutes flew by.  I spit into the toilet (avoid the sink, it will clog) and saw a cloudy, murky liquid.  Toxins!  NBD.

I actually pulled two more times on day one for about ten minutes each time.

Day 2
Today wasn’t bad either!  I had red wine with my dinner last night and felt a little foggy when I woke up but still came downstairs with three four-legged beasts about 7:00am.  I drank my lemon cayenne, popped in my coconut oil, and swilled away.  I found myself checking the clock after about 16 minutes but held out for the remaining 4 minutes.  Easy! I felt energized and ready to start the day (and go to hot vinyasa!).

Day 3

Uneventful, easy didn’t even look at the clock until 22 minutes!

Day 4

I got up at 3:30a this morning when Douglas left for work (UGH) and started my routine.  I drank my lemon cayenne water and made a juice before pulling.  I don’t know if this was the right thing to do or not but hey, I am learning as I go with the whole OP process.  It was fine today, I enjoyed it per usual but 7 1/2 hours later it’s now 11a and I am SO TIRED.  Obvi because I woke up so early but it’s made me question if OP really does clear up the fogginess or it was all in my head the first couple of days.  My skin is starting to clear up but that could be random.  Stay tuned.

Day 5 and 6 and 7 and…

No complaints at all y’all.  My teeth feel whiter, my skin looks clearer with less redness, and it helps me focus and feel clearheaded every morning.  My girlfriend Austyn pulled all week with me and she experienced headaches the first few days which I had read is a side effect but I never had happen.  She also spoke to her dentist who said oil pulling is great for your gums!

I’m going to incorporate this practice into my morning (or afternoon!) routine whenever possible.  Sold!
