It’s that time of the year again. The leaves are changing colors, the weather is getting cool, you may have even lit your first fire. So on your next visit to the grocery store pick up these simple ingredients. Among countless other benefits, ginger root is a powerful antioxidant and helps diminish bloating. In a recent 2015 study of 41 participants with type 2 diabetes, 2 grams of ginger powder per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 12%. (check out the study if you are interested) The orange gives a small dose of Vitamin C and it adds the perfect amount of sweetness—for serious Vitamin C boost add 1/2 teaspoon of one of BEC’s fav superfood Camu Camu—and last…… the cinnamon adds insane flavor and has all sorts of healing properties, anti-inflammatory being at the top of my list. For some reason cinnamon helps my clients diminish their sweet cravings. Yes you read that correct. It helps take away sugar cravings. I promise it’s worth a try.
But, as you know, I love reading about your day, your schedule, your routine, your ritual, your whatever. I find it fascinating. Mine not so fascinating; but I am really liking my mornings now that I have a great rhythm with my ONE YEAR OLD. If you don’t care, keep on scrolling but if you’re like me and enjoy a peek into the start of someone else’s day read on.
My morning routine often starts the night before. I pull out my three tea bags and place them in a mug near my Keurig. I take a (clean, empty) baby food jar and dump about two tablespoons of cold pressed coconut water and a tablespoon of Spirulina or Chlorella powder, give it a good shake and stick it in the fridge. These couple of steps maybe save me two minutes in the morning but to me, every second counts.
Also, I don’t set an alarm, I have a baby who lets me know when it’s time to wake up.
He. Is. An. Awesome. Sleeper.
So, every morning starts the same around 7:00 when I hear Aubrey starting to coo and talk from his room across the hall. Thankfully I have always been a pop out of bed, non snooze button user so I do just that. I get right up and hit the bathroom to chug 8 oz of water and then spend about two minutes dry brushing my body. IT IS THE BEST. You can read my post on it here and a great goop article here.
I then take a quick shower and get dressed. Aubrey is still chatting away playing in his crib with his lovies, happy as a clam.
My three dogs and I head downstairs, they go outside, I flip on the news, and I am off to the kitchen.
I get the hot water flowing into my mug with the tea bags I laid out the night before. Green Detox, Dandelion Root, and Skin Tea are my current favorites. I also love Big T NYC tea but if I need to grab something quick I like the Yogi brand I can buy at my local market.
After adding 16 oz of water to my large mug I throw in two scoops of Vital Proteins Collagen Powder. I then set it aside to cool, dissolve, and steep.
Idrink a warm lemon water to chase my made-the-night-before green algae drink from the baby food jar. Guys, it isn’t tasty, it isn’t pretty, but it’s doable and it is super good for you. I take it like a shot and drink a bit more of my lemon water.
I then whip up Aubrey’s milk, let the dogs in and feed them, and then FINALLY go get my baby (literally my favorite part of the day) around 7:30.
After getting him changed we head downstairs where he has his milk and I make him a scrambled egg, a piece of Dave’s Killer Bread raisin toast and cut up fruit (a lot of strawberries, blueberries, and mango this summer). While he eats, I drink my tea and make my game changer green smoothie with SO MANY GREENS and throw in add ons like camu camu which is super high in Vitamin C.
I share my smoothie with Aubrey and he absolutely loves it!
By this time, his sitter is arriving and I am heading to Iron & Grace for a killer workout and then off to start my day.
I am usually so full from my breakfast routine that I don’t need anything further until 1:00 when Aubrey and I have lunch together.
It probably seems like a lot but this routine really flows well for us! Now, I would love to know how you spend your time each morning!
I recently came across Dirty Lemon on Facebook of all places. I did some research and just had to get my hands on their drinks ASAP.
I’ve heard a lot of rumblings about this company lately. From blogs like this one and this one. Oh, and this one. And namely I was just curious. Curiosity can be costly, however. At $65 a case (six bottles) this stuff isn’t cheap. But I am all about trying the latest and greatest if it’s going to encourage my already pretty healthy lifestyle.
There are several options of drinks depending on your needs. I liked the idea of detox first as I was coming off of a Vegas trip and thought, you need this.
The ingredients are listed as filtered water, cold pressed lemon juice, dandelion root, ginger root, and activated charcoal (from coconuts). All great things right? Can’t hurt. And the nutrition info looked pretty good too.
Plus you’re instructed to drink it after a big meal (no problem there) so I chose to drink it each night before bed. One night I even had wine with dinner (gasp!) and then had my detox.
The taste to me is fantastic, sort of earthy and lemony. BUT be aware that I will drink anything if it has some health benefits. I have been known to chug algae if I am in the mood and algae tastes like…well, algae and most people steer very, very far away. “But think of the benefits, babe…”, I say to my husband as he looks at me like I have just licked a dirty diaper.
Anyway. That’s neither here nor there.
I did this for five nights and honestly can say I felt very “flushed” out in a good way. I felt more energized, more focused, more able to take on the day (and an 8 month old!). I did not wake up looking like J Law unfortunately but I still have Skin + Hair to try next week, so, there’s hope (keep your fingers crossed for me). Oddly, I also felt like my teeth looked whiter (could be the result of the charcoal).
The only negative I could see is I take a prescribed medication at night and charcoal can bind to meds rendering them ineffective so be weary of that before you guzzle your juice…you may have to adjust your med sched. NBD in my case.
I will plan to order this again, probably quarterly (hey, at least the shipping is free!). Some of the benefits of detox mentioned on the website: it calms the stomach, supports liver/kidney function, and traps impurities before they can be distributed through the body. I’ll take it! I haven’t been into coffee lately. I don’t know if it’s because the weather is warmer and I want something lighter, but these days you can keep your coffee. Instead I am consuming boatloads of tea. Specifically Big T NYC tea. I have introduced y’all to Theresa before as a BEC Badass here. Ever still the badass, she is cranking out the BEST tea. I know what you’re thinking..tea is tea, right? I thought so too. Until I started drinking at least a cup a day of this floral, fragrant, naturally sweet, beauty tea. For real.
I feel like it has improved my skin, given me a boost of energy (not the jittery feeling I get from coffee), and it is also loading me up with antioxidants. I purchased the oversized tea strainer with my first order and feared it was going to be a high maintenance process. IT IS SO EASY. But if that scares you, tea sachets will be out later this year.
